Carbon Dioxide Levels Hit A New Planet Wide Record

As of this May, the Earth’s atmosphere has more carbon dioxide than ever recorded, according to two separate data analyses by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scientists started accurately measuring atmospheric CO2 from atop the Mauna Loa volcano nearly 60 years ago; last month’s readings show that levels are 50 percent higher than pre-industrial estimates at 419 parts per million. Some experts think they may be the highest numbers the planet has seen in more than three million years....

Check Out These Gorgeous New Pictures From China S Moon Mission

Since then, the status of the mission–and the conditions of the spacecraft–have remained somewhat mysterious to American scientists, but gradually information is funneling back. In December 2015, we learned the Yutu rover discovered a new kind of moon rock. Now, China has made the data sent home by the two spacecraft open to the public, and Emily Lakdawalla from the Planetary Society (a non-profit organization that promotes space exploration) has made it more easily accessible by putting the images on a faster server and labeling them in English....

China S Hypersonic Military Projects Include Spaceplanes And Rail Guns

. TSC Beijing, a Chinese titanium manufacturer, successfully 3D printed a titanium fuselage central box for its high-speed aircraft, which cuts production time from two years down to just six months. TSC used the 3D laser printer TSC-S4510 (one of the world’s largest 3D printers) to print the fuselage, within an error tolerance of less than 0.5mm. The intended aircraft was identified only as a “high-speed” (read: hypersonic) aircraft. Given its narrow wing roots, and 23-foot total length, it is likely a hypersonic UAV....

Clashes Between Cats And Coyotes Continue In Culver City

While living so close to human cities and towns, coyotes have adapted to consume garbage, ornamental fruits, and even domestic pets. It leaves many pet parents, especially those with outdoor cats, wondering how to best protect domesticated animals from becoming a coyote’s next snack. Research has found that coyotes in certain places have a higher chance of going after pets as meals. Los Angeles coyotes have a diet that consists of up to 20 percent from cats, despite studies from other cities that say cats only comprise less than 5 percent of coyote diet....

Congress Is Putting Money Toward Gun Violence Research For The First Time In Decades

“Honestly, it was a complete shock,” says Daniel Webster, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “I did not think this was something that the Senate would agree to.” The $25 million, which is part of a large spending bill, is divided evenly between the Center for Disease Control and the National Institute of Health. Although it’s not yet known how the money will be distributed to researchers, Rebecca Cunningham, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Michigan, says it would be enough “to fund about eight or ten standard size NIH grants....

Cop25 May Be The Most Important Climate Change Meeting Ever And The Us Is Barely There

When it was signed in 2015, the Paris Agreement was considered an historic step forward for collective climate action. Under its terms, all parties who signed on—186 countries and the European Union—have until November 4, 2020, to revise their emissions targets and make them more ambitious (which research on climate change has shown is sorely needed). The international community has been working on this since 1992, with minimal results. We’re still barreling toward a climate apocalypse unless something is done, and quickly....

Crazy Fast Or Just Plain Crazy

Ray Zahab, Kevin Vallely, and Richard Webber slogged through temperatures as low as minus 40, and subsisted on a 7,000-calorie-per-day diet of deep-fried bacon, hunks of cheese, and butter. The Michael Phelps-like caloric intake helped the men persevere through whiteout conditions at 10,000 feet. “If you took a cloud, wrapped it around your head and then duct-taped it, that’s what a whiteout is like. It was exhausting,” Zahab told the Associated Press....

Curiosity Pays A Visit To The Intriguing Dunes Of Mars

The “Bagnold Dunes” surround the mountain’s northwestern edge. Some are as tall as a two-story house, and they’re very active. Satellite imagery shows the Martian winds shift the dunes by as much as 3 feet per year. Curiosity’s arrival at the dunes is not only a first for a Martian spacecraft, but for all of space exploration. “No active dunes have been visited anywhere in the solar system besides Earth,” says a NASA press release....

Darpa Wants Cheap Head Up Displays That Work In Any Kind Of Light

DARPA wants a multi-band head-up display, which could be mounted to a helmet or a weapon scope, that combines several wavelengths of light into one image. Sunny? No problem–the camera can see in visible light. Smoke bomb blocking your view? No sweat; the camera can see thermal infrared signatures. The system would also have near-infrared capability to help users see through darkness. A new DARPA project called the Pixel Network for Dynamic Visualization (PIXNET) seeks proposals for new sensors that can do all of this in one package....

But some experts say that the marketing for these supplements has outpaced the actual science. While a foundation of evidence suggests that probiotics can be helpful for a few specific gastrointestinal conditions and even promote wellbeing in otherwise healthy individuals, science has raised more questions than answers. This “alternative” is a relatively new kid on the embedded design block called PSoC® FirstTouch, from Cypress Semiconductor Corporation. The Cypress PSoC is better known as a programmable mixed signal array or Programmable System-on-Chip (PSoC). While sporting an 8-bit microcontroller clocking in at a maximum 24MHz and supporting 512 bytes of SRAM, 8KB flash, these rather lackluster specs are offset by four analog and four digital customizable advanced peripheral building blocks (known as PSoC Blocks), and the ability to build a crazy-small microcontroller project....

Ducati Leaner And Meaner

Vacural molding lightens the engine casing and produces a more rugged throttle body, the part that delivers air to the cylinder heads. As in last year’s 1098 model, Ducati uses a low, wide throttle body, which allows the cylinder heads to be more compact, and thus lighter. The single-sided aluminum swing arm (Ducati’s signature rear-wheel suspension) is made of multiple components. But the company reinforced the joints to make it stiffer than previous swing arms, so it finally matches the feel of a traditional double-sided suspension....

Eleven Essential Widgets For Your Android Home Screen

When you flip through the screens of your phone, you most likely see each app as a little icon. But some applications let you swap that icon for a widget—a larger image that sometimes lets you access the app without opening it. Widgets add aesthetic appeal to your home screens while also providing some useful features. For example, weather apps can deck out your home screen with the day’s up-to-date temperatures, music players might let you skip songs or hit pause, and memo apps can display prominent notes....

Everything You Need To Know About Near Field Communication

What Is NFC? NFC is a short-range, low-power communications protocol between two devices. One device, the initiator, uses magnetic induction to create a radio-wave field that the target can detect and access, allowing small amounts of data to be transferred wirelessly over a relatively short distance (in NFC’s case, the distance must be less than 4 inches). If that sounds a lot like RFID, the tech used by, for example, wireless toll-collection devices like EZ-Pass and FasTrak, it’s probably because NFC is pretty much an evolved form of RFID....

Fda Approves First Ever Treatment For Severe Alopecia

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder caused when the immune system attacks hair follicles, mistaking them as foreign invaders. The hair loss may begin as small circular bald patches around the head, but it can expand to larger overlapping patches. Unexpected flare ups from extreme stress can worsen hair loss. The condition may affect a person’s self-image and can be a target of harassment, as when presenter Chris Rock bullied actor Jada Pinkett Smith for having alopecia at the Oscars in March....
